Healthy Foods Taste Awful- Junk Food Tastes Great- Is This Beneficial From An Evolutionary Standpoint?

December 17th, 2010

If evolution were true, then why has evolution set us up for a failure like this? Why aren’t we programmed to enjoy eating healthy food like fruits and vegetables- it would be to our benefit if we were.
Evolutionists: explain.

    Many years ago I was very ill, I was raised on Skippy peanut butter & Welches Grape Jelly on Wonder Bread. This might tell you how old I am. That was the favorite sandwich for kids in the 40′s and 50′s and or Oscar Meyer Baloney sandwich. Later on in the 60′s the public and the nutritionists came out to say these things were not good for kids to be eating. I found out at around 23 I had low blood sugar. Out went all the junk food and in came the good healthy food, and I began a regimen of taking mega doses of Vitamins, and minerals, and eating properly which I was never taught. I had to drink protein drinks with brewers yeast and liver powder, and soy lecthin granules and after a year of vitamin shots, and the above routine I was well and doing fantastic. My skin cleared up, I gained some wait because I never ate good food before only that which tasted good, sugar, chocolate, desert, smoked and partied all the time. I gave up all my bad habits and got healthy.
    Since then I have not been able to eat junk food.
    So healthy food has been my fare for the last 40 years and I at times miss some of the things I used to eat, but they made me feel so very bad, that I would never eat them now, even if I could.
    So there is much to be said for health foods and the vitamin and mineral and herbs that make us well, and keep us healthy.
    We did have a Mrs. Gooch’s Health Food Market that was started by Sandy Gooch who almost died because of the antibiotic;s they used to put on the chickens. We can thank her chemists Dad for making it possible not to have meats with that on them/
    I do not eat any processed foods. Back then it was hard to get the things I needed. The health food stores had very little to chose from certainly not like today with Whole Foods Markets, Henry’s Ranch Market, Sprouts, Wild Oats, Mediterranean Markets,Mother’s Markets where we can get meats without any preservatives, no hormones, and are safe for those who cannot eat the regular meat. However what ever the companies leave out, salt, hormones, sugar we consumers end up paying through the nose on.
    I am glad they do have all the health food markets. I can actually get deserts that do not raise my blood sugar and can stay healthy.
    I for one love healthy foods.
    But to each his own.
    God bless,
    Camille

    False Premise.
    There is plenty of healthy food that tastes delicious (maybe not ‘health food’ though), and many people enjoy eating fruits and vegetables.
    The unhealthy eating habits of people in industrialized and commercialized cultures can be blamed more on a society that promotes consumption, and all but ignores the benefits of a healthy diet and regular exercise.
    People liking junk food =/= proof against evolution.
    ‘If evolution were true’ then it would have massive amounts of evidence to support it – ranging from biology, genetics, zoology, geology, and paleontology.
    Oh wait – it does.

    Delicious Cauliflower
    6 servings
    * 1 head cauliflower
    * 1 cup good quality olive oil
    * 1 tsp salt
    * 2 Tbs minced garlic
    * 2 Tbs chopped parsley
    Separate cauliflower into flowerets and cook just until tender. Drain and keep warm. Heat the oil and salt in a pan and cook garlic and parsley for 2 minutes. Pour over the warm cauliflower and serve with additional chopped parsley if desired.

  4. Tybee says:

    I read once a long time ago (so please forgive me if the explanation is fuzzy) that in primitive man getting fats, sugars and salt was necessary but extremely difficult so we have a built-in passion to consume large quantities when we can get them. That worked in 50,000 BC, not so much now.
    On the other hand, if you only ate junk food, eventually your body would crave healthy foods and think that a carrot for instance was the most delicious food you had ever tasted.

  5. Snowflak says:

    Read the ingredients for a bag of chips. If all those chemicals I can’t pronounce or spell were added to a carrot stick it would taste just as good as when added to a potato (a healthy vegetable) to make potato chips (junk food). Healthy food + artificial chemicals = junk food.
    Normal tobacco = healthy
    tobacco plus addictive chemicals added by tobacco companies = unhealthy
    The chemicals added to food are just that – chemicals, which make one addicted to the food they are eating. If I add chemicals to carrot sticks to make you feel addicted to them you’ll eat just as much as you do chemicals added to processed foods. The carrot will turn into a processed food. The food itself is not unhealthy, it’s the chemicals added to it which humans invented and do not exist on their own otherwise people would turn into the fat pigs they are today eating more than their body requires and turning fat so it wouldn’t make sense for nature to make a carrot stick taste like a hot fudge sundae. People would do nothing but eat all day which is not healthy for the body, the environment and the food supply. Nature didn’t design food to be an activity so people spend all their time eating like cows grazing but that’s what the food industry has turned food into through artificial chemicals so they can make money off of people eating ten times more food than their body requires by adding artificial flavors nature never intended the foods to have which is why so many are overweight and unhealthy as a result of.

  6. Nightwind: Mwa ha ha! says:

    Only some junkfood tastes great. There’s a lot more things that would be really terrible for you that would taste awful…so awful that we don’t even think of them when we think of food.
    Evolution is not about “programming.” It’s about beneficial genes being passed on to future generations. A lot of today’s junk food didn’t even exist 100 years ago. we don’t suddenly develop genetic programming every time we invent a new terrible food.

  7. ∴♠∴ ℘uℜ℘lξ ωi†ςhh∂zξl ∴♠∴ says:

    I would take a fruit salad over a packet of fries any day. Junk food is nice, but not all leafy greens and such are bad. If you know how to dress them up, add flavour, add them with other foods, they can be just as enjoyable.
    Raw – mangos, strawberries, bananas, watermelon etc, are you telling me these are so horrible to eat?
    Maybe you like junk food more than healthy food because you’re too lazy, feel it’s cheaper to buy food than prepare it yourself, of you have some pre-disposition to sugary or salty foods in which case you might need to see a gp.

  8. Star93 says:

    Our body is made to consume a healthy diet. If you don’t believe it, take a look at all the obese people around you. They didn’t get that way from eating spinach salad. Neither did most of the ones with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
    When we eat unhealthy foods (fast foods, junk, preservatives, additives), we get sick. We feel tired and sluggish. We gain excessive weight.
    Evolution never made it so that we could live healthily off of Doritos, Twinkies and Big Macs.
    And since when did a fresh, ripe,sweet peach taste awful?
    Have you ever made a peach, banana and mango smoothie?
    Have you ever had homemade, fresh baked bread, warm, straight from the oven?
    Or frozen grapes on a hot summer’s day?
    I’d take those choices over greasy fast food any day!

  9. No Chance Without Ceiling Cat says:

    The only requirement for a creature to be evolutionarily successful is to get its genes represented in the next generation. There is therefore very little selective pressure acting on older members of the population, so health problems that affect older individuals remain.
    If you’re subsistence living then calorie intake is the only thing you need to worry about. You’re never going to get too many calories, therefore no selective pressure.

  10. Adam says:

    It was beneficial when food was hard to come by. The more nutrients, the better. These days it is not good to have too many nutrients when food is readily available, so most likely we will begin to like healthier foods over the years.

  11. ~~Birdy~ says:

    like this question
    It seems we have evolved toward self destruction
    a lot of healthy food is good, though, once you acquire a taste for it. Popcorn is healthy because my body tells me it is. I’m gonna go make some.

  12. together says:

    We evolved as animals who didn’t get food as easily as we do today. The problem wasn’t obesity, it was starvation. So we evolved to like high-calorie, high-energy foods like sugar and fat.

  13. drmultiv says:

    The environment today for most of us is vastly different than that which existed over 99% of our evolutionary history. We no longer are concerned with starvation. Junk foods were never so widely available. And actually most people do like fruits.

  14. Chekt says:

    Evolution doesn’t “program” us.
    And what makes you think that Humans are the end result of evolution, and not just another stepping stone? The human body is far from perfect in many ways.

  15. PC User says:

    Evolution is true; the unhealthy people will now die, leaving the healthy to continue the habit.

  16. poems says:

    Obesity and related illnesses are God’s punishment for the sin of gluttony

  17. Skookum says:

    Theists – please feel free to eat all the junk food you like.

  18. Dapper Dan, Fisherman says:

    The normal state of existence for mammals is near famine

  19. You_Aske says:

    we are not programmed why does god allow junk food to exist why dont he poof it away
